Disengaging is its own skill
Everyone talks about how hard it is for ADHD brains to start. Fewer people mention how hard it is to stop. When a task is interesting, urgent, or finally flowing, an ADHD brain latches on — and prying it loose to go do something more boring can feel almost physically painful. Restarting is a cold start
Even after you've managed to let go of task A, task B is waiting with its own on-ramp — and ADHD brains struggle at on-ramps. Task initiation is one of the weakest links in ADHD executive function, so every switch lands you back at the hardest part of any task: the beginning. Working memory drops the thread
To switch cleanly, you have to hold the state of the old task ("I was about to reply about the timeline") while loading the new one. ADHD working memory is a small, leaky container. So the moment you turn toward the new task, the old one's context evaporates — which is why you come back an hour later with no idea where you left off, and why the "quick switch" you promised yourself turns into re-reading, re-deciding, and redoing work you'd already done.
The transition is emotional, too
Switching often means leaving something you like for something you dread, or something easy for something hard. A lot of what looks like "getting distracted mid-switch" is actually your brain flinching away from the feeling of the next task and grabbing the nearest hit of relief — a tab, a phone, a snack.

The Fix Has Two Halves: Switch Less, Then Switch Cleaner
You'll never eliminate switching — real work requires it. But you can attack the cost from two directions. First, reduce the number of switches, because the cheapest switch is the one you never make. Second, lower the cost of the switches that remain, so the ones you do make don't wreck the next 20 minutes. Do both and the daily drain drops dramatically.
Half One: Switch Less
Batch like with like
Most of your switches are self-inflicted and avoidable. You answer one email, code for ten minutes, answer another email, check Slack, code again. Every gear-change costs you. Instead, group similar work into blocks: all your messages in one communication block, all your deep work in another, all your admin in a third. Within a block you're changing tasks but not contexts — same tools, same headspace, same emotional register — so the switch cost stays tiny. Batching is the single highest-leverage move because it converts dozens of expensive context switches into a few cheap ones.
Guard one context at a time
Batching only works if the outside world lets you stay in one lane. It won't — not on its own. A single notification banner is an involuntary micro-switch: your attention gets yanked to the new context whether you consented or not, and then you pay to climb back. The fix is to make the interruption impossible, not to resist it. Give intrusions a parking lot, not a switch

Instead, keep a single scratch note or capture list open and dump the intrusion there in five seconds, then keep going. Half Two: Switch Cleaner
Some switches are necessary and scheduled — you really do have to leave deep work and go to the meeting. For those, the goal is a clean handoff instead of a jarring rip.
Build a two-part transition ritual
A good transition has a close-out and an open-in. Close out the old task by spending 60 seconds finishing your current thought and — critically — writing down the very next physical step, so future-you doesn't have to reconstruct it. Open in to the new task by naming, out loud or in writing, the one concrete thing you'll do first. A named first step turns the new task's cold start into a warm one. Two minutes of ritual routinely saves twenty minutes of flailing on either side of the gap.
Leave yourself a breadcrumb
This is the antidote to leaky working memory, and it deserves its own line: never leave a task without leaving a breadcrumb. One sentence — "next: write the error-handling case for empty input" — is enough. It sounds trivial until the day you come back from an interruption and, instead of losing fifteen minutes figuring out where you were, you read your own note and are moving in ten seconds. The breadcrumb externalizes the exact thing your brain drops during a switch.
Put a timed buffer between contexts
Slamming straight from one context into another is where residue and dread pile up. A short, bounded buffer — 90 seconds to stand up, breathe, look away from the screen — lets the old task settle before you load the new one. Keep it timed, though. An open-ended "quick break" between tasks is a black hole for an ADHD brain; a 90-second buffer is a bridge, while an untimed one becomes a forty-minute detour on your phone.
Let a check-in carry you across
The hardest transitions are the ones nobody prompts. Left alone, you stay tunneled in the old task past when you meant to switch, or you drift in the gap and never land in the new one. A periodic external nudge fixes both.
